Corsica Studios - The Fundamentals

For years Corsica Studios has been a much-loved mainstay of London's nightlife landscape, and sadly, after 24 years, it has closed its doors for the time being. As a recurring chapter in many of our own nightlife stories, we were really excited to be asked to create the score and sound design for the film. Directed by Pedro Takashi and commissioned by Resident Advisor, the film charts the origins and rise of the club through the eyes of the people who were central to making Corsica what it was. We were particularly interested in thinking of Corsica not just as a physical space, but as something that exists in people's memories, a place that lingers and shifts depending on who experienced it, and how this continues to evolve even after the doors have closed. We were also thinking about the psychogeography of the club and how moving through it as a dancer, DJ or performer leaves a trace; the atmosphere becomes something you carry with you. That atmosphere is shaped as much by the people who inhabit the space as the architecture itself, and a big part of the film is about celebrating those who made Corsica what it was. Sound became a central way into this idea. We recorded the impulse responses of Room 1 and Room 2, capturing the sonic signature of the spaces while they were empty. There was something particularly poignant about doing this in a club that won't exist in the same way again. It allowed us to bring the physical reality of Corsica into the composition, using its acoustic imprint as a foundation.
