The brief

Outernet London is a free-to-access venue in central London, or “public galleries,” featuring giant ultra-HD screens that deliver unparalleled audio-visual experiences. For the opening of a major new extension at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), Outernet collaborated with the hospital to create an immersive experience that would mark and celebrate this important moment for staff, patients, and the wider public. We were approached to compose original music and sound design to accompany the launch and promotional film, presented at the Outernet London space.

The opportunity

The opening of a new hospital wing represents years of planning, dedication, and collective effort, from architects and builders to medical staff and families. Our challenge was to create a sonic score that reflected the humanity and individuality behind such a large and important project. The sound needed to support the visual narrative without overpowering it, respecting both the emotional weight of the moment and the sensitive context of the hospital’s work. This was an opportunity to bring warmth and nuance into a public space, aligning the hospital’s vision with Outernet’s immersive technology.

Our approach

We set out to use tonalities that felt human and hand-made, evoking a sense of care, craft, and community. The music drew on prepared piano textures and light percussive elements, chosen for their organic and tactile qualities.

The sound design was created specifically for the space, taking advantage of Outernet’s localized speaker array to position different characters and sonic elements throughout the environment. This spatial approach allowed us to subtly guide audiences through the story of the new hospital extension, creating an immersive but unobtrusive soundscape that complemented the visual content.

The result

The experience offered audiences a delicate, emotionally resonant sound world that underscored the importance of the new GOSH extension. Rather than dominating the environment, the sound design wove gently through the space, reflecting the human stories at the heart of the hospital’s mission. The result was a respectful, immersive sonic layer that enhanced the narrative without distraction, supporting a moment of celebration and reflection for everyone involved.
